Finally, Kompott is presenting himself in our Bachelor exhibition on the 3th floor in the main building of ZHDK. As a mock-up environment we have 3 buttons connected to 3 persona-scenarios, which can be used to send test messages. Additionally the visitor can use its own mobile phone to send Kompott a personal text-message with emoticons.

Just a week before the start of the exhibition we had to make place for the game designer`s display – and therefore leave our studio. Lukily some master students gave us shelter, so we were able to assemble Kompott there.

Face – Stage Six – Graphical Raster Design (Final Version)

Based on the feedback we received about the code-generated feature of Stage One, we designed geometrical features with an overlying raster, to give it the appearance of a LED display. That way it was easy to morph Kompott’s features into different shapes, from showing emotions to displaying abstract emoticons (e.g. star, flower, etc.). Now the features were not perceived as smart and independent any longer, and generated a strong contrast to Kompott’s physical appearance.

Findings of the Konradhof Workshop – Icons & Symbols

In the Kompotts grafical user interface we give different types of messages according symbols. Written messages are represented by a letter. If there are images of videos attached you`ll see a postcard. Voicemessages are displayed as a tape and status messages look like a post-it. We were testing, if our extreme users understand these icons and observe their associations.

Associations: airmail, letter,
Expected Content: important message, illustrated travelog, will be late

Findings: symbol is clear; because of the airmail association many participants expected the message to come from abroad;

Associations: letter, postcard, business card, credit card, dentists appointment,
Expected Content: detailed travelog, short message, short message, neutral message

Findings: candidates had troubles identifying it as a postcard; a deckle edge might help;

Associations: tape
Expected Content: music, radio play, Beethoven, spoken message of a family party, rerun of a radioshow, invitation to a party

Findings: all participants linked the symbol with sound, rather music than spoken messages though. Might replace it by a small tape – used for answering machines or dictaphones.

Associations: handwritten, Johannes still alive, ATM card (post)
Expected Content: personal invitation, contact immediately, check content well

Findings: most candidates were not accustomed to post-its; might help to add a pin.

Findings of the Konradhof Workshop – fontsize and contrast

We were testing two fonts, used in Kompotts GUI (Calibri and Segeo Print) for readability in sizes from 12pt up to 38pt. The testing was especially important, as fonts and images on Kompotts face aren`t as sharp as on most of the the commercially available screens.

Fontsize

Lower Limit: Eight candidate couldn`t read text smaller than 18pt. Two were able to read 16pt
Readable Size: 6 candidates voted for 28pt to be easily readable. Three participants said that 38pt and bigger would be the best size to read.
Three people prefered Calibri, one liked both and the rest didn`t have an opinion on that subject.

Contrast:

All participants agreed that the font (Calibri size 36pt) was readable with 40-50% contrast.
